Out of curiousity, I just did a highly-unscientific benchmarking test between a 1.86Ghz Pentium M processor on a 3 year old Asus W3V laptop, and a Core 2 Duo 1.3Ghz processor on a Dell D430.

The results:

7zip 4.60 Beta, compression benchmark, using only one CPU thread for fairness:

Pentium M 1.86Ghz: 1183MIPS

Core 2 Duo 1.33Ghz: 1340MIPS

So the Core 2 Duo wins. Which just goes to show you how far CPUs have come over the years. Most impressive, is the fact that the 1.33Ghz consumes nearly one-third of the power!

The exact specs are below:

Intel Pentium M 750, 1.86 GHz, 27 Watts (Source)

Core 2 Duo ULV U7700, 1.33Ghz, 10 Watts (Source)
