Vista: The specified print monitor is unknown

The specified print monitor is unknown

Symptoms

When trying to install a shared network printer in Windows Vista, you get an error which states:

Windows cannot connect to the printer.
The specified print monitor is unknown.

The Cause

This is a bug in Vista. If you disable the UAC, Vista is seemingly unable to add a network printer.

The Fix

To fix this, you’ll need to install a “Performance and Reliability Update”, KB938979. Bizarrely, this update is listed as Optional by Windows Update, and so you may not have installed it. I shall refrain from commenting further on the lunacy of this 😉

Vista Crashes: yk60x86.sys

Problem

Vista Crashes (Blue Screens) with an error message mentioning yk60x86.sys.

Solution

We’ve got a bunch of Sony Vaio VGN-SZ5MN laptops at work and a lot of them are blue screening (BSOD) as soon as you plug in the Ethernet cable. If that’s not enough of a clue (hehe), the problem is the Marvell Yukon Ethernet Controller driver.

To fix the problem, download the updated driver from the Marvell Driver page.

Or try this direct link to the Driver Installer for Windows 2000/XP/Vista

Asus W3V won’t resume from Hibernate

Problem: After installing Hardware drivers from Windows Update I found my W3V would not boot up from a hibernated state. The progress bar appears to finish, but windows never loads the GUI.

Solution: Turns out, the LAN drivers Windows Update installs mess with the power management features on the W3V, preventing it from successfully booting from a hibernated state. You should re-install the Asus LAN Drivers from here: http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us

Installing Creative Nomad on Windows 98 First Edition

Nomad Jukebox – Installing Original Windows 98 Support

The Creative’s Nomad Jukebox Zen NX and Xtra supposedly only support 98SE/ME/2000/XP, but it’s still possible to transfer files to your Nomad with Windows 98 First Edition.

The Solution

The solution is shockingly simple. If you try to install Creative Media Source, it’ll tell you your version of Windows is too old. But it’s OK, all is not lost – we don’t need Creative Media Source. All you need is:

  1. The latest Creative Nomad Zen Drivers
  2. Creative Nomad Explorer

Install these, reboot. And you can begin dragging and dropping files to the Nomad Explorer Icon (Or window) which shows on My Computer. A lot of features from Media Source are obviously missing, but to be honest, all most people care about is moving their files onto the Player, and this is a good temporary solution
